Kindergarten is a time for planting seeds of lifelong learning. Besides building vital learning skills, kindergarten students have to start preparing for primary school placement! Students at VEO are encouraged to identify their strengths ahead of school interviews to ensure the very best offers. How do our kindergarteners prepare for school interviews and applications? Read ahead for first-hand accounts from our alumni!

Mock Interviews – Preparing for Primary School with Confidence
Margaret Chang, a Harbour Green alumna, said, “Our teachers would conduct mock interviews at the primary school level to familiarise students with the interview format and content.”

Margaret’s mother added, “Interviews for primary school were primarily conducted in Cantonese, but students were likely to encounter some English and Mandarin questions. VEO’s trilingual teaching approach encouraged students’ self-expression and made the transition to primary school a lot smoother.”

A Middle Kornhill alumna, Audrey Chan, described how teachers encouraged students to think and contribute to discussions, as well as raise their hands when answering questions. In addition, teachers helped students learn campus rules and guidelines, and set up a mock primary school classroom ahead of interviews.

According to Audrey’s mother, VEO’s mock interviews included various activities, including interactive games, storytelling, and reading aloud. Upon completion of the mock interview training, an assessment report would be provided to identify the children’s strengths and weaknesses. In addition, it helped parents to identify where improvements were needed to be made.

Primary One Admissions Seminar & Alumni Sharing Session – Learn from the Best!
Along with the mock interview training, VEO provides parents with comprehensive assistance in choosing primary schools. Margaret Chang’s mother said VEO conducted a ‘Primary One Admissions Seminar’ which briefly explained procedures and considerations in choosing schools. Parents of alumni would also be invited to share their real-life experiences, admissions tips, and teaching methods at top schools. These presentations offered current VEO parents valuable insight into the primary school admissions process.

Regular Classroom Assessments – Know What’s Happening!
A strong parent-school partnership is essential to ensuring a child’s optimal development and learning journey. Margaret’s mother said that VEO carried out regular classroom assessments to monitor progress in Chinese, English, mathematics, art, science, and social networks. It afforded parents a better understanding of their children’s capabilities. For instance, Margaret’s assessment revealed that she was gifted in mathematics, which then helped her attain primary school offers from leading schools.

Audrey’s mother was thrilled with VEO’s classroom assessments, as they helped her understand Audrey better – her progress in different subjects, attitude, personality, and skills. Audrey is an extroverted student who enjoys exploring and communicating with others, so she went on to a primary school that offered the IB Program’s interactive teaching framework.

Joy and Stability in the Classroom: The Key to Children’s Confidence
These alumni have exceeded their potential through the IB curriculum in four years, developed vital future-ready skills, and reached for the stars! Margaret’s mother thanked VEO for paving a solid path to primary school. She said she hoped Margaret would continue to develop her independent thinking and problem-solving skills. Likewise, Audrey’s mother expressed appreciation for the immense support VEO provided to her daughter. As a result, Audrey has enjoyed many opportunities to build her confidence in the primary school application process.
