Our K3 children worked together to make a traditional Chinese turnip cake 2025-2026 (BV)
As the Year of the Dragon approaches, our K3 children worked together to make a traditional Chinese turnip cake. Throughout the process, they learned that cooking involves following a sequence of steps, and they eagerly participated in each stage. By measuring the weight and volume of the ingredients, the children were introduced to everyday measurement units such as grams (g) and millilitres (ml). They also carefully observed how the ingredients changed from raw to cooked, as well as the different textures and forms that emerged during the cooking process.
This experience was more than just a cooking activity—it was a rich and multidimensional learning journey. The children collaborated by taking on different roles, learned to coordinate and support their peers, and demonstrated patience and focus while waiting for their turn. Most importantly, they learned to appreciate one another’s efforts. Enjoying the turnip cake they made together became a meaningful and memorable highlight of their learning.

  • We learned about measurement, and became familiar with the units of milliliters and grams.

  • We learned about cooking and preparation procedures.

  • We learned that ingredients can be made into something new.
