Victoria Wu Zhi Qiao Bridge Building Activity Day

Studying in school is never something easily achievable to children in poor and remote areas in China. Classrooms are with dim lights and poor facilities and children have to travel across rivers and rugged road every day to get to school. However, their willingness and fortitude in learning are not affected by any of these unfavourable factors. In order to provide them with a safe learning environment and an opportunity to a bright future, we had organized our first “Victoria Wu Zhi Qiao Project – Victoria Wu Zhi Qiao Bridge Building Activity Day” jointly with the PTA, Victoria Shanghai Academy and its PTA on 18 September 2010 (Saturday) last year at the Victoria Shanghai Academy Hall. We had raised HK$900, 000 in this activity, plus the HK$300, 000 donated by “Victoria Charitable Trust Fund”, we had gathered HK$1, 200, 000 in total which would be used for building two bridges in Liutan Village, Huangmen Town, Qingshui County, Tianshui City in the Sichuan Gansu Province in China.

During the activity, parents and children made use of recycled materials to create more than 200 models of bridges to express the meaningful of “Wu Zhi Qiao”. They also drew message cards and built a Love Bridge to convey their love and caring to their friends in Mainland. There was a “Hong Kong Victoria Wu Zhi Qiao” on the venue on which children stuck their mosaic design to record their contribution to the “Hong Kong Victoria Wu Zhi Qiao”. Through this activity, children learned the importance of having a generous heart, caring heart and loving heart, most important of all heart to heart, as well as building empathy.

We did not only raise money for this bridge-building project, 31 teacher and parent representatives had also visited the Liutan Village, Huangmen Town, Qingshui County, Tianshui City in the Sichuan Gansu Province in China from 16th – 20th October 2010 to send our blessings to the villagers. During the visit, the Honourable President of the Fund Sir David Akers-Jones, president of the Fund Professor Edward Ng and our Chief Principal Dr. Maggie Koong had hosted the Opening Ceremony of the Bridge. Apart from this, they had also visited the primary schools in the village to understand more about the life of villagers and given them some daily necessities, stationery and message cards.

This year, we had our second ” Victoria Wu Zhi Qiao Bridge Building Activity Day” on 24 September 2011.Students, teacher and parents worked together to build our model Victoria Wu Zhi Qiao bridge as a symbol of our care and support for the needs of communities in rural China. Over 150 families joined this activity and raised about HKD 940,000 for the meaningful project.

In mid October, 40 teacher and parent representatives have visited the villagers in Sichuan where our second Victoria Wu Zhi Qiao Bridge has been built. They have also visited the primary schools in the village to understand more about the life of villagers and gave them some daily necessities.

We sincerely thank you and the “Victoria Charitable Trust Fund” for your generosity and we hope to convey our love, caring and kind-hearts to the needy children in the village.
